Join us in making theatre more accessible

Oily Cart creates and shares world-leading sensory theatre for children and young people, aged 0 – 25 years old. We work with disabled artists of all ages across the UK, creating platforms for them to express their creativity and showcase their talents.

Online, at home, on your street, at your school, at your local theatre, in a hydrotherapy pool, or even through the post, we connect with children and families – opening up accessible spaces to be together in ways that work for them. We tour two sensory theatre shows a year, designed especially for those who are most excluded, presenting in theatres, libraries and community settings across the UK. We also provide workshops and sensory storytelling adventures.

We make space for young audiences and artists who may not communicate with words but have a lot to say, welcoming more than 3,000 disabled children and their families and friends to our unique productions each year. From spectacular sets made of living plants, to sensory play spaces which help families communicate and connect, our creativity is led by disabled children. Each show, workshop and sensory storytelling adventure is tailored to each individual, responding to their interests and way of being in the world.  

For many of our young audiences, an Oily Cart show will be the only theatre they experience in their lives.

We are a charity in need of support to connect people, materials, sounds and spaces and create experiences and theatre which otherwise wouldn’t exist. We work in partnership with specialist schools, arts organisations, children’s centres and children’s hospices to ensure our work reaches children and families who have the most barriers to accessing theatre. We create shows to be shared by disabled and non-disabled children alike, developing new ways of existing together that can work for everyone.
